Starting Sensory play early with your baby is crucial for development of vision, motor skills, language and social skills.

Every mother wants their baby to have an enriching and engaging day, but we don’t always have the time and energy to sit and play with them.

  • Here are 5 easy set ups that will jumpstart those brain connections, entertain and delight your baby.

  1. Tummy Time Sensory Bags. So simple to make! Fill a ziplock bag with water, oil or other fun liquid and then include, beads, buttons, pompoms, anything that your baby can push, squeeze or touch.

2. Sensory Jars. Save up those water bottles and turn them into a sensory delight for your baby! Glitter, beads, water beads, buttons or pompoms in a liquid is all you need. Of course these activities need to be supervised by an adult, especially if the water bottle lid is easy to remove.

3. Sensory Snack. Yogurt, pudding, oats or baby food any favorite snack of your baby can be a fun opportunity for sensory play. This pigs in the mud activity from messylittlemonster.com is a quick and easy one!

4. Sensory Hula Hoop or Laundry Basket. Using a hula hoop is the perfect way to contain the little one during tummy time. They can scoot around in a circle and enjoy the delights at each turn. Attach baby friendly items with differing textures, sizes and colors. So many opportunities for learning and brain development!

5. Water Play. Can be perfect for siblings or observational play. Sponges, rings, scoops with baby on their tummy is certain to be a winner.

Most importantly with babies and sensory play is to keep trying! If they don’t take to it right away, try a different material or set up, try taking it outdoors, or into a different space. This kind of play will depend on the baby, age, and temperament…but it is ALWAYS worth it!!

Happy Playing,

Heather
